Toshiba 40E220U – The Bare Necessities Inside a Box

Toshiba 40E220U – The Bare Necessities Inside a Box

Expect to pay between $380 and $525 for the 40” LCD Toshiba 40E220U and you will be mostly pleased with the basics this set offers. If you are after good brightness and contrast and vibrant colours, then the Toshiba 40E220U is probably for you. Negative aspects include poor shadow detail and inaccuracy in some of the colours. The design aspect of the model is seriously drab and has no appeal whatsoever. Just picture the decades-old silver trim and black bezel finish and a stand that refuses to swivel and you’ll be rushing to wear that Abba outfit in no time. As you might burn some extra calories, as well as the Toshiba 40E220U to get the settings right, we have included the user guide here, for your convenience. Apart from the obvious absence of almost any feature you would normally find in any decent 40” LCD, you do have the luxury of finding a matte finish, a 60Hz refresh rate, a USB port and 2 HDMI ports.

Colour Accuracy Almost Perfect But For Some Minor Flaws

During our colour and picture test we observed that the Dark Grey x/y, the Bright Grey x/y, the Before Average Temperature, the After Average Temperature, the Red Luminance Error, the Green Luminance Error, the Blue Luminance Error, the Cyan Hue x/y, 1080i Deinterlacing (Film), Motion Resolution Max and Motion resolution with dejudder off all fared pretty miserably. Still, these flaws did not reflect badly on the overall colour accuracy and picture quality. As opposed to Samsung, Toshiba seem to have got their black colour well in vogue with the real thing! Even in video processing the Toshiba 40E220U received rousing reviews.

Toshiba 40E220U settings

We had to have a look at the Toshiba 40E220U Amazon review page to see what is brewing in buyer’s minds, so that we could convince ourselves that the Toshiba 40E220U is one good investment. The backlight settings seemed to be quite a hit with power-saving freaks, especially when they did not respond, due to the autonomous-minded Energy Saver taking over and deciding that you are, well, wasting too much energy whilst sitting on your arse! Disabling the Energy Saver will not get you arrested and will allow a pleasant picture (which would otherwise be obscured by the lack of light).
Other interesting frailties were detected within the VGA PC input, which could not handle a 1920x1080 resolution at 60Hz and only displays 4:3 resolutions. The remote control was dismissed as cheap and unresponsive to touch.

The majority of buyers on Amazon found the Toshiba 40E220U to be a bargain, living up to their meagre expectations. If, on the other hand, you expect to find perfection in every appliance you buy, you must be living in Fairyland or have surreal ideals about what is worth it and what isn’t.
One aspect of LCD’s which is normally overlooked is their ability to produce good sound. Pictures and colours seem to overcast the sound but our Toshiba 40E220U passes the sound test with ease. This will definitely save you some big bucks into having to invest in a surround system to derive great sound effects from a film.

Value for money is a term you don’t hear often enough and reading reviews from satisfied clients saying they would have spent a few 00’s extra to enjoy the benefits of their set is never going to be an easy one for Toshiba’s scalp hunters.
Do be aware that some models do come with minor issues but as long as you have the warranty you should have no problem returning or replacing it. This is good for anything you decide to buy, so have a heart!
